Change and Cynicism  Caroline

I am one of the so-called “chorus of cynics.”  I’m probably one of the biggest cynics you will ever encounter.  I don’t believe in “true love”, or “happy endings” and I’d be one of the first people to say that “change” is a silly and idealistic notion.  And that’s what I really believed, at first.

The thing that makes me say that the concept of change is idealistic is that we as a nation are not cohesive enough to actually accomplish the massive change we want and need to effect.  I want change just as much as the next person, but without pulling together it is impossible for one individual to effect change.  Or so I thought.

But I’ve been watching Barack Obama’s campaign.  I’ve seen him unite otherwise divided groups.  I’ve seen him give even the most disenfranchised groups a reason to vote.  I always thought of voting as some sort of a “civic duty”.  Like paying taxes; you just have to do it.  But Barack reminds me that voting is our most important right as a people.  Because it gives us a system through which we as a nation can come together and give a voice to our opinions and beliefs.  And that is where change comes from; togetherness.  I vote for Barack Obama because his message is real.  He’s not just words, he’s actions.  And he is not just in it for himself, he knows that he represents a people.  E purbis unum: Out of many, one.  I think that Barack Obama can be our one.  I think if he can inspire a nation, if he can bring together a society that is increasingly individual-oriented, if he can give hope to so many of the downtrodden, then maybe, just maybe, he can lead this nation to be the change that we want to see in the world.

And one day maybe he will have the opportunity yell out “fired up?” from the white house steps, and the people of the world will respond “ready to go!”  and we will change the world, together.
